Members are added to groups at the start of the year if they have taken part in a parkrun or a Power of 10 recorded race in the previous year or, if not, at the point they take part in their first championship event.

Groups are allocated based on best 5K/parkrun or equivalent 10K/half marathon/marathon time over the previous 12 months (logged in a parkrun or on Power of 10) as long as this is representative (if not previous years or the current year may be taken into account) .

Anyone with no parkrun/race time from the previous 12 months will be added to a group once they get a 5K/parkrun (or equivalent) time during the current year.

Anyone joining the club once the championship has started is added to a group based on their best time over the 12 months before their first event.

Anyone running in January a time faster than that for the group they are in may be moved to the relevant group.

Best efforts are made to have a similar number of members in each group whilst trying to ensure that the 5K time range in the group doesn’t go above 90 seconds (likely not to be possible for the slowest and quickest groups).
